Ubuntu Budgie and Ubuntu Mate 24.10 VM Images for VirtualBox and VMware
Ubuntu Budgie project announced the latest version of Ubuntu Budgie codenamed 24.10 Oracular Oriole: “The latest budgie-desktop v10.9.2 forms the basis of our Oracular offering. Budgie Menu: The upstream budgie menu will now show applications which report as being Terminal-based (e.g. Terminal=true in their desktop file). Users of applications like Neovim rejoice! The key focus for the team for this cycle has been the conversion of our distro to a Wayland based distro. We have been working closely with our fellow Buddies Of Budgie maintainers. Our default layout has been revised to ensure a smooth transition later to our wayland offering. The X11 plank dock has been dropped. We have now the budgie-desktop dock styled with our Pocillo theme. The top-bar defaults to a dark bar theme. In 24.04 external deb packages were installed via gdebi. gdebi has now been dropped in favour of the updated snap-store that handles side-loading of deb packages…” Read release announcement here.

Ubuntu Mate project announced the latest version of Ubuntu Mate codenamed 24.10 Oracular Oriole “Ships stable MATE Desktop 1.26.2 with a handful of bug fixes. Switched back to Slick Greeter (replacing Arctica Greeter) due to race-condition in the boot process which results the display manager failing to initialise. Ubuntu MATE 24.10 .iso is now 3.3GB Down from 4.1GB in the 24.04 LTS release. If you follow upstream MATE Desktop development, then you’ll have noticed that Ubuntu MATE 24.10 doesn’t ship with the recently released MATE Desktop 1.28. I have prepared packaging for MATE Desktop 1.28, along with the associated components but encountered some bugs and regressions. I wasn’t able to get things to a standard I’m happy to ship be default, so it is tried and true MATE 1.26.2 one last time. Accompanying MATE Desktop 1.26.2 and Linux 6.11 are Firefox 131, Celluloid 0.27, Evolution 3.54, LibreOffice 24.8.2…” Read release announcement here.
